Lenten Reflections 2017 – Journeying through Forgiveness

February 28th, 2017 by Stephen Bauman

Dear Friends,

Observe a holy Lent. This has been the invitation to followers of Christ for centuries during the forty days prior to Easter.  To walk with him as he makes his way to Jerusalem and beyond. To consider the spiritual disciplines he models such as forgiveness. From the cross of grief, Christ was heard to say, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” and before, he instructed his disciples to pray, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us,” even as they journeyed along the road that brought them all to what seemed an inglorious end.

This Lent, friends and members of our Christ Church family have prepared a daily means for you to consider how forgiveness informs your faith walk during this holy season. They are a richly diverse group from many different geographies around our nation and globe, formed by a wide variety of traditions. What they have in common is a sincere desire to grow in grace and love and a willingness to extend themselves to you by sharing a bit of their faith perspective.

You might think of this collection as a many-faceted gemstone refracting forgiveness into numerous different wavelengths and colors. Some may naturally blend with your own inner light, and some might offer a challenging new spectrum. In every case, they are offered as humble testimony to the transforming grace that was released from Calvary’s cross through the triumph of resurrection. There is no better evidence of this than the authentic and profoundly mysterious gift of forgiveness.

In gratitude for those who have forgiven me,
and for the many teachers who line the pilgrim’s path,

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Bauman
