Our presentation and discussion will offer an opportunity to encounter an ancient form of Christianity that remains mysterious to many westerners – Orthodoxy. We will begin with a brief overview of the origins of Orthodoxy then take a look at orthodox institutions, church governance, doctrine, biblical interpretation, canon law, liturgy, and mission. We will also compare and contrast Orthodoxy with other denominations, focusing on their ecumenical relations, especially as far as they concern the Methodist-Orthodox dialogue. We’ll conclude with Q and A.
Our guest speaker will be Rev. Sergey Trostyanskiy, a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church. Fr. Trostyanskiy holds a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary and is a Research Fellow of the Sophia Institute of Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox studies at Union.
