Catholicism – Religion in America Lecture Series

The Roman Catholic Church: Belief, Practice, and Continuing Tensions 50 Years After Vatican II.  The immense promise of the Council and its startlingly evangelical, ecumenical, and inter-faith understanding of its place in the world of the 20th century hit many snags and occasioned a backlash from which the church, though very diminished, is just emerging. This presentation will offer a general introduction to Catholic belief and practice and an analysis of the continuing struggle happening under the surface between forces of renewal and traditionalists seeking to blunt reforming efforts, even those now championed by Francis, the present Bishop of Rome.

Paul E. Dinter, Ph.D. served for 23 years in ordained ministry, 15 as Catholic Chaplain at Columbia University) before leaving to marry.  He has since worked for several non-profits, consulted for others, and now teaches Religious Studies at Manhattan College in the Bronx and helps coordinate the College degree granting program at Sing Sing Prison as part of Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison (www.hudsonlink.org).
