Advent with the Psalms – Rev. Dr. Violet Lee

December 8th, 2018 by Violet Lee

Psalm 98:4

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation by our God.

Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;

break into song; sing praise.

At the dinner table my children will occasionally break into song. This is the image that comes to mind as I read Psalm 98.  This is what God desires of us – for us to be genuinely happy and shout for joy. In the unexpected scenes of routine meals and other family happenings around the world, rare moments of joyful outbursts help to enliven our spirits.  The memories of what God has done in our lives and in the lives of others, cause us to shout for joy!  In Advent, not only do we move forward with expectancy and hope, we reflect upon what has happened by God’s mighty hand.

When watching the evening news and seeing so much despair, I’m grateful for these moments of joy.  In so many faces and places in our country and around the world, there is a clear need for joy.  The echoes of Zachariah’s proclamation, “The joy of the Lord is your strength,” come to mind.  So, we should embrace moments to “break into song, sing praise” knowing that we are strengthened in the process. Will you break into song?  Will you sing praise?  If not in this Season of Advent, then when?

Prayer: Thank you God, for a reason to shout for joy!
