Psalm 96:1-2
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Sing to the LORD; bless his name;
announce his salvation, day after day.
Singing has been a vital part of most faith communities as a way of expressing feelings, theologies, and ideologies. The act of congregational singing allows for praising, praying, teaching, and unity. When we sing together as a congregation we begin to focus, not on ourselves but on God.
The Psalmist says, “Sing to the LORD a new song.” We sing a new song because our knowledge of God is not confined to a recitation of the past alone. However, it’s not just the new songs; the old songs still give many a sense of worship and often reveal new meaning.
Prayer: Ever-present God, as we wait for the Savior of the nations, we will experience songs of new and old, from near and far. In music, help us focus upward; in unity, help us sing your praise; in peace, help us welcome the savior. We pray this day after day. Amen.
