Religion in America Lecture Series – Judaism

January 22, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

RELIGION IN AMERICA – JUDAISM

Judaism is often described as a triangle formed by God, Torah, and the people called Israel. The lived reality is more complex however.  Together, we will grapple with questions like “Who is a Jew?” “Are the commandments of the Torah meant to be observed today and how?” and “How do we talk about God in the face of persistent evil and suffering?” We will also consider the reality of intermarriage and demographic changes.

About our speaker:  Claudia Setzer received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in New Testament, and also holds a Master’s degree in rabbinics from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Dr. Setzer’s books and articles focus on social relations between Jews and early Christians, and she has a special interest in North African Christianity and nineteenth-century women interpreters of scripture. She has served for several years as chair of the Early/Jewish-Christian Relations group at the Society of Biblical Literature, and has been an associate editor of the Journal of Biblical Literature, has been a contributor to PBS website “From Jesus to Christ,” and is a contributor to the recent publication A Jewish Annotated New Testament, edited by Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Brettler (Oxford University Press). She is currently working on a book on the Bible and progressive movements.
