Christians have always observed with special care the days of our Lord's Passion leading to Resurrection. It became the custom of the church to prepare for Easter by a season of penitence, prayer, self-reflection and other spiritual disciplines. In this way, the faithful were able to empty themselves of all that had cluttered their spiritual lives so that Christ might find a receptive home.

Our Thursday Lenten services this year focus on five short parables that offer wisdom concerning our spiritual work in this season of preparation. Allowing ourselves to brood upon their meaning prompts a deepening engagement with God and one another, and helps us discover new ways to off-load all that impairs these relationships while up-loading helpful enhancements. Each week we are encouraged to drink deeply from the wellsprings of our spiritual tradition.

At the conclusion of each service one of the clergy or program staff will prepare a simple meal-perhaps a favorite recipe for soup and bread-served on the third floor. The evening's celebrant may host table conversation concerning the worship focus, or spiritual disciplines that can be ignited during Lent. Or perhaps you will find simple pleasure in sharing bread with your family. All are invited.
